Invest in NZ – not in US properties

12 July, 2011

Invest in NZ – not in US properties is my mantra.

This is an interesting discussion thread. My personal opinion is that the economic fundamentals in New Zealand are sound and current indicators point to some good opportunity in selected “pockets” of the NZ property market. However, it is important to do your research! The attitude of prospective investors should be one of long-term “investment” vs making a quick buck thru “speculation”. The US market is, to my mind, currently one of “speculation” whereas NZ is one of “investment”. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many investors who previously supported the US (and Europe) as sound investment propositions, are now abandoning those markets because of increasing nervousness about economic instability, in favour of more commodity driven economies such as Australia and NZ.

11 July, 2011

Results of interest in the survey include a noticeable improvement in sentiment in the legal sector, widespread shortages of residential real estate listings, and more balanced feedback from the retailing sector than the outright pessimism which has dominated for a long time.

Australia’s Home Price Slump Pits Local Bank Bulls Against Foreign Bears – Bloomberg

Australia’s Home Price Slump Pits Local Bank Bulls Against Foreign Bears – Bloomberg.

Interesting article – especially from a New Zealand perspective. The NZ property market has already experienced a correction and some areas are still facing flat or dropping property values, but there are now some ‘pockets’ in New Zealand where property prices are starting to increase on the back of some quite compelling economic and demographic drivers. With the NZ/Aus currency exchange rate significantly favouring Australia, NZ investment property must be looking increasing attractive to Australian investors.
